Lobster Traps, are used to catch Lobsters. Lobster traps, have weights in either side of the trap, either really heavy weights, or cement bricks. These weights help when the trap is released back down into the water, that it lands correctly on the floor 100 FT down. It is important that the traps are correctly upright so that the trap works to trap lobsters.
(look at the image below for help as i explain) A lobster trap works as so. There are 2 entry holes at the left of the trap as you can see. The lobster enters from one of the either 2 holes. It can get inside the trap, but when it enters the trap, the lobster drops a little since the entry holes are elevated, so that the lobster cant escape. The bait bag, is placed right below the green bar with a string tied to eeither sides of the trap (mirror image below) which is right in the middle of the 2 entry holes. The lobster wants the bait, but needs to enter the trap to get it.
Once the lobster is in the trap, he goes from the left side, to the right side of the trap as you can see above. There is another elevated entrance hallway thing, that leads from the left side of the trap, to the right side of the trap. This is where the lobster stays until the trap is hauled. The 2 weights, you can see, are on either side of the trap. They look like weights that are secured by gates. This is a good lobster trap picture. Sometimes, you get crabs inside of the trap because they like rotten bait also.
The part of the trap that has the 2 entrance holes, and the bait bag, is known as the kitchen (left side of the trap). The part of the trap that has a space for lobsters to sit, is known as the parlor (right side of the trap). The little black rectangular holes in the parlor, are there so that little lobsters can escape, while the bigger lobsters are still trapped. This makes it easier when we have to take out the lobsters from the trap and throw them back into the water if they are too small.
I hope you learned about how lobsters are trapped in this lesson. There will be a new lesson every day, (if i can think of more things to write about) please leave me with ideas for this section of my blog. Thx!
